Essentially, the higher the horsepower is then the more efficient and stronger the treadmill will be. The minimum should really be 1.75HP and if you are looking to run long distances then you should really look for a 2.0HP motor at least.

The belt needs to be long and wide enough for comfortable running. Ideally, for long distances, a length of at least 55" with a width of 20" should do the trick. Look for incline capability for uphill walking. A 10% incline is the most common on modern treadmills. Speed is also important, of course. Check what the maximum speed is - many go up to 20kph.
